The Power Of a Daughter!.PEARL tells her NHJ Story
Pearl walked into Afros n Mo on a very cold day with her little baby in tow! She had to pamper her hair a bit and not even the cold weather could stop her. At first sight, she looked way too young for her age. Thanks to the beautiful twists out that lay on her head. We were so eager to hear about her natural hair journey and she did us well by sharing every juicy detail. We were thrilled by her story, we know that you too will
“It was my daughter who inspired me to start out on my natural hair two years ago. I had relaxed hair and kept it braided most of the time. After giving birth, I hated the stress of sitting when doing my hair. One day, a friend challenged me by asking me how I would reconcile matters the day my daughter refused to stay with her natural hair because mine was relaxed. This hit home! I looked at my daughter’s hair and marveled at its beauty. That was my inspiration to start my journey as well
Her plan was to transition since she did not want to lose her hair at once but the mixed textures of the hair became so painful and time-consuming. One day, she just woke up and decided to do the big chop. “Luckily, the natural hair movement was already in vogue. Considering the fact that all my sisters were all-natural, I found lots of support from them all plus the many natural hair girl groups I found myself in, not forgetting YouTube”
“I have learned to love my hair and it is more alive when I spritz it. I feel like a plant in such moments! I never thought African hair can blossom; I had convinced myself that only muzungu hair could grow and look beautiful” This one got us laughing!
Amidst the challenges that come with natural hair, she said that she finds it to be of low maintenance. She has owned her mane and has learned to play with it. “I have learned to appreciate my natural beauty. This is very wonderful because it has given me more chances to take extra care of myself. To pull off some looks, I ensure to invest in hair accessories and this has in a way boosted my self-awareness”
Concerning her lifestyle, she says that it is important to watch what you take in, drink a lot of water and food that has wonderful natural oils.
“I am very proud of my identity as an African. We have beautiful hair and skin. It isn’t necessary to straighten our hair because we are beautiful just the way we are. Like anything else, the natural hair way is a journey that needs patience, a good diet, and commitment. Even when it could be challenging, there is a lot of help! You only need to look to the web and natural hair experts will teach you things like scarfing, pinning your hair and general DIY styles”
We asked for her thoughts about the natural hair movement; “I do not think that this bubble is about to burst. This is who we are! I believe it is here to stay!” What an empowering statement!
